Over 52% of Native households are under-banked, nearly 4 times higher than the national rate, and over 3 times higher than the rest of Indian Country.
We are a federally registered 501(c)3 California Corporation focused on the front-end community development efforts to help facilitate and enable relationships that bring banking utilities to these underserved communities.
Though-out the San Diego area over 76% of residents in the Native communities live under the conditions of bank deserts. We're working directly with the local tribal governments to help solve this injustice!
Banking is the lifeblood of a functioning economy, as deposits and loans provide the essential capital for economic development. Though San Diego is known to be the Indian Gaming Capitol of the World, over 76% of residents in the Native communities live under the conditions of bank deserts, as they must travel over 10 miles to their nearest bank. 10% of the community members even have to drive over 35 miles! A 2020 U.S. Census estimates over 6,500 residents live within our affected area, with a median age of 35 ± 3, and a household income of $87,000.
Not surprisingly, over 52% of Native households are under-banked, nearly 4 times higher than the national rate, and over 3 times higher than the rest of Indian Country. Our project aims to increase awareness, improve positive perception of a local, Native-centric bank and increase the rate of full banking utilization, thereby expanding individual financial capability and growing diverse tribal economies with capital for small business and home ownership.
The Native Finance Development Corporation has received a 3-year, $1.2MM award from the Department of Health & Human Services to understand and structure a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) that serves people living on Indian (Native American) reservations. The project focuses on the understanding and creation of a working model for a Native CDFI among the 18 federally recognized tribes in San Diego County.
To produce the highest impact, Native Finance is narrowly focused on the front-end community development efforts and outsources all backend banking utilities to a banking as a service (BaaS) provider. We are actively evaluating partnerships with major banks that are committed to fulfill their Community Reinvestment Act requirements in our community.
